With Arizona Heat, Labor-Intensive Projects Need an Early Start

With summer here and the mercury rising, electricians in North Scottsdale, AZ need to make sure that when they work on home projects, they get an early start. Heat isn’t just unpleasant—working in it can cause serious illness or even death. When you call for an electrician, make sure you understand the importance of an early start time, even if you were hoping to sleep in that morning.

Heat and manual labor don’t mix

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has put out fact sheets about the dangers of physical labor during extreme heat. Scottsdale regularly sees temperatures of 110 degrees Fahrenheit and above in midday, which can have serious health consequences for workers, including:

  • Heat stroke: If not addressed, heat stroke can cause death. If a worker loses consciousness or becomes confused, and their body temperature is above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, call for an ambulance immediately. Remove as much clothing as possible and apply water or ice packs to the skin.
  • Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion symptoms include nausea, dizziness, confusion, sweating and thirst. The body temperature can be above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. To treat heat exhaustion, shade, cool air and plenty of fluids often take care of the problem, but if not, the person needs medical attention at once.
  • Heat cramps: When you sweat too much, your body loses salt and electrolytes, which causes muscles to cramp. Staying hydrated is key.
  • Heat rash: Heat rash occurs where you sweat, and often where skin rubs up against each other. It often appears like a series of blisters on the skin and is equally uncomfortable.

Temperatures can easily climb to 90 degrees by 10 a.m. or earlier. When you’re calling an electrician in North Scottsdale, AZ, be aware that summer projects will need to start early and may have to take place over several days. Your patience and understanding will help keep manual laborers safe during the extreme heat.

Workers are advised to take breaks in the shade, rest and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
