Ceiling fans are great additions to both indoor and outdoor living areas. Not only do they keep the room cool and comfy, but they can also add to the aesthetic of the room while freeing up more floor and wall space.

Like any other installed appliances in your home, however, you need to ensure that you’re getting the right size for the room. The last thing you want is to have a ceiling fan too big for the room, swallowing it up in its presence and causing safety hazards. Neither is it ideal to have a much smaller fan that will be ineffective in cooling the space because it simply doesn’t hold as much power and capacity.

That’s why choosing the right size of a ceiling fan is an important consideration you need to take before making your purchase. Here are some tips for you to find the best size for your ceiling fan.

Follow the Size Chart

In case you didn’t know, there is a preset standard for the ideal ceiling fan size depending on the size of the room. For example, anything less than 8×8 feet can do with a 30-inch diameter fan at most.

A room that’s sized 9×9 feet to 12×12 feet will need a 41- to 51-inch diameter fan; 12×12 feet and 16×16 feet will need a 51- to 60-inch diameter fan; and rooms bigger than 16×16 feet will need a 61- to 71-inch diameter fan.

Apart from the size of the fan itself, you also need to consider its length drop. Some fans can be flushed onto the ceiling, making it perfect for low constructions. There are also those with a more dramatic aesthetic, which might come down lower. Account for at least 7 feet of clearance from the fan’s blades, just to ensure that nobody will be injured walking under it.

Proper Installation

Another thing you can do to ensure safety is by calling on a licensed electrician to help with your ceiling fan installation. Remember, these fans run on electricity, and typically come with lighting fixtures, so some wiring needs to be taken care of. Unless you have experience dealing with electrical stuff, you’re much better off leaving it in the hands of the pros.

Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you have any questions or issues. Get your ceiling fan installed well so you can enjoy a cooler room ASAP.
